Procedure for Late Refs
M Greiwe 2008-09-15 22:25:57

What is procedure for late refs? Our ref was 20 minutes late for DMTSO vs. DMTSO. We called Ken, asked nearby refs, lined up parent refs, and talked about reschedule. We would have played with parent refs if needed. That would be uncomfortable if not Dublin vs. Dublin. Thanks.

The procedure for late referees (or late teams, for that matter) is fairly straight forward. As we get later in the season, the possibility increases with the construction on Avery Road and the first game start times moving earlier (yesterday, one of the teams was missing several players at kickoff time).

First of all, try to call me (402-9916) or look for me (in most cases, I am at Avery park somewhere, but in some cases either your game or I am at Darree Fields). In nearly all cases, I have received a confirming e-mail or phone call from the referee(s) confirming each game. Unless one of them completely forgets an assignment or has some sort of emergency they will show up, eventually. In some, but not all cases, the referee(s) may already be working another game that is running behind at the park.

Bottom line is this: I would wait 15 minutes for the referee (or other team -- in the case of another team, I would always have my GOYSL/MOSSL binder with me that has the coaches contact information in it including a cell phone number). If no referees show up, you have a couple of options. You can either attempt to find a referee from another field (this does not work in most cases, but is worth a try). If one of the parents/siblings of a player for one of the teams is a REGISTERED referee, I would use that person(s). If no such person exists, I would turn the game into a scrimmage -- with coaches refereeing. MAKE IT CLEAR TO ALL PARENTS THAT THIS IS ONLY A SCRIMMAGE otherwise, they can get caught up in the moment. Finally, you can always try to reschedule the game. You simply send me an e-mail with some possible dates, and I will try to get a field and referee(s) for one of the new dates.

In this situation, the referee was at the field in advance of the game, he just happened to be missing a few rather important items needed to referee a soccer game. I don\'t think that will happen, again.
