Status of Teams Lacking a Head Coach
Ken McMahon 2009-07-18 13:05:07

There have been a number of posts concerning the status of the five teams without a head coach at the moment (we had about the exact same number at this time last year).

First of all, keep in mind that Dublin United uses volunteer head coaches. All of the coaches in our program are expected to get licensed over time -- typically during their first year in our program. Contrary to what some parents might believe, MANY professional coaches with area clubs are NOT licensed when they begin coaching. They go through the same training that our parent coaches attend in the F, E and D level licensing courses.

It has been our experience that there are multiple reasons for wanting to participate with Dublin United. Compared to the typical recreational team, the U-8 to U-10 player will typically play about 1 1/2 times as many games (around 22 vs. 15), participate in three tournaments (another 9 to 12 games), practice for much more time (at least twice as many hours when compared to the DSL), will have the opportunity to attend a weeklong Kickoff Event in early August, will play with a higher level of referees, will participate against a higher level of competition and will do so in nicer uniforms.

Comparing Dublin United to the DSL (or other recreational programs) is not fair due to all of these differences.

It is quite typical for us to have teams lacking a head coach (in nearly all cases, teams have one or two assistant coaches already) at this point in time. Would we like to have head coaches for every team? Absolutely. At the same time, we have determined that most parents would prefer to stay in our program and gain the advantages that our program brings -- even without a head coach in mid-July -- rather than return to the DSL program.

I am one of the parents who posted regarding this matter. While I appreciate and completely understand the stress and pressure folks are under to kick off the season, I feel it\'s a bit unfair to down play our specific reasons for joining - specific to our child vs. another.

I have no problem waiting on a coach for our team. It\'s just that myself and MANY parents are getting confused with the email messages vs. the information in this forum.

As an aside - if the coaches are not licensed, I\'d advise changing Dublin United\'s marketing materials, webpage, and registration information which all promote the fact that the coaches are licensed (which as you\'ve explained, isn\'t quite the case at first). It can be misleading.

Thanks for your time in clarifying.
